Our sessions are for Nursery and Primary aged children and are in based in Roebuck Wood in Hermitage.   The aim of Barlow’s Wild Woods is to ‘explore, discover and learn’ in an outdoor setting. Visiting our woods is a wonderful opportunity to understand and learn about the natural environment and to simply enjoy being outside. To walk, to explore, to listen, to look, to touch, to play, to learn about the world around us and the perfect place to improve our physical and mental health.

Outdoor learning has many benefits: building independence and self-esteem, improve motivation and concentration, encourage children to be active, to co-operate and work with others, enhancing practical problem solving skills, a lifelong love of the outdoors  and above all having ‘great fun.’

Children will have ‘hands on’ experiences, will be inspired and challenged in a stimulating and exciting setting.

Sessions will be led by Allison Barlow, a primary school teacher with over twenty five years of experience, a Primary PE and Early Years specialist and a qualified Outdoor Leader,

An article in the Guardian last year stated ‘a two hour dose of nature a week significantly boosts health and wellbeing, even if you simply sit and enjoy the peace.’

After a year of Covid related restrictions we all need some ‘outdoor time.’

All sessions are outside. We have a sheltered area with a picnic table but all children and accompanying adults must come dressed for a day outside. Lots of layers are essential, waterproofs are useful and definitely wellies or boots on your feet.
